John's research paper topic
In the American media, there is much excited talk of China's economic rise as a global super power and its advancement into modernity. Behind the hype popularized by American popular media, is China's prosperity being enjoyed by all sectors of society? Is the real China, rather than only the urban elite, moving into the 21st century? This question seeks to address how a pattern of rhetoric can distort or falsify reality.

One thing to consider that popular press and business press seems to ignore with regards to emerging economies is that "progress" and "growth" rarely continues in a straight line (or geometric progression) up. I think it is likely that China will "stumble" and those differences to which you refer may tear it apart. good luck.
This makes me excited to read your paper. Good topic. However, does it really matter what the rest of China is like? If their elite are taking over the world, shouldn't we be focused on them?
