Give Your Name to the Cause!

I understand that many people are passionate about different issues. Here at a Catholic University I overhear many conversations about religion, sex and abortion but would you be willing to give your name to the cause... literally? A 19 year intern of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has done so by legally changing her name to “Cutout Dissection.com” to protest the use of dissection in the educational system. Her name leads you to a website on why she did it and information about PETA. I know people are passionate about their beliefs but I find this to be ridiculous. Is this making a mockery of her conviction? Does this show appropriate support for her principles? Obviously she is getting the attention that she wanted but is this just a cry for help?
I found this to be repulsive. I find PETA pointless, non-influential and radical and this action by this mentally incompetent girl proves it. This is what is wrong with these groups. Why do these people with no lives feel like they are going to make a difference by changing their names to some PETA Website? Sure I looked at it, made fun of it, and dismissed it. On one of her links she mentions that, “My fellow interns call me Cutout, but my family still calls me Jenny.” I would call her stupid. She also pathetically states that “[Her] favorite thing to do is to introduce [herself] to people as Cutout Dissection.com, which always raises a few questions.” The only question that it raises to me is as to her mental capacity.
The scarcest thing though is that she is actually encouraging other morons to peruse this type of demonstration. The only voice of reason on the blog where this information was posted was a guy who was also named “Nick”,
“Really? This is the dumbest thing I have heard of in months.
What a waste of my tax dollars to allow you to go through the court system to get this done. Not to mention a waste of your own money to accomplish this.
I can say so much more as to why this is just, absurd... but I won't bother.”
I don’t think I have ever come across such a laughable absurdity in my life. This girl formally known as Jennifer Thornburg is a blemish on the American Spirit. This is truly a mockery of what our founding fathers have fought for in the matter of free speech.

Wow, I am completely offended by this post. How dare you insult this girl who has found something to believe in and dedicate her life to. She obviously cares deeply about the suffering of animals. Animals are drowned, gassed, and tortured before being sent to our schools so we can dissect them for no purpose other than curiosity. You should be ashamed of yourself for so cruelly degrading this poor girl and the great organization of PETA. PETA saves and protects millions of innocent animals, while all you have done with your life bitch and moan about this dedicate and intelligent girl. Her new name is an inspiration to all people who believe in something and want to better the world. You should get a life.

AMEN NICK! I completely agree; I cannot believe this is an actual case! I can understand being passionate about a cause and standing up for what you believe in, but this girl has gone WAY too far (I mean seriously, cutoutdissection.com?) I also cannot understand why anyone would support her overly extreme behavior. If you want to dedicate your life to something, do it for something worthwhile. I think dissecting animals in school is a great opportunity to deepen our learning. I have serious concern for her mental well-being as to people around her; she could be a serious treat to society.

Wow. That was funny. A good laugh is always nice. I don't know if the fact that it is true makes it funnier or not though. I think it probably just makes it kind of sad.

I'd say that animals are dissected for a bit more than curiosity though. I'd hate to imagine in what state medicine would be if we never opened up an animal.
And to tell Nick to get a life (wow, has anyone heard that one before?) shows you haven't spent all too much time with him, because from the little time I've had with him, I think he does a bit more than "bitch and moan," and gets pretty involved himself.

Also, as far as I can tell, there is no evidence to call this girl intelligent. And if we want to do some deduction here, I think we have some evidence to argue the contrary. But then, I didn't go visit her name, so maybe that's where she's put all her smarts.

What animals aren't innocent? I didn't see anyone raise their hand in class when Dr. Sitter asked who was a vegetarian. Unless you only eat guilty meat.

The idea of changing your name to a website is completly stupid, but a little bit funny. People do dumb things like this for little publicity stunts all the time. Take Chad Ocho Cinco, formerly Chad Johnson; he changed his name as a publicity stunt and to be honest its just dumb and the people who do it look foolish.

As a Biology major who is intending on going to veterinary school, disecting animals is a big part of my education. Don't get me wrong, I love animals and thats why I'm planing on being a vet, but the only way for me to get to a point where I can help animals is through disecting animals. You have to know how something works before you can help it.

Wow, talk about taking your protests to the extreme. I do have to admit that she found an ingenious way of getting her 15 minutes of fame, however I seriously doubt that she actually persuaded anyone to change their thoughts on dissection using this extreme method. The knowledge that I gained about muscles and the way that the organ systems fit together when I dissected a cat in high school was something that could not be learned from a book. I think that dissection plays a necessary and crucial role in the education of medical students. I don't know about you, but I personally wouldn't want to be operated on by a surgeon who has learned about the body using only diagrams and pictures.

Well said, Kari. Dissection is clearly a necessary part of scientific learning for people like doctors and vets (including tyler). But I think she has done more than just garner attention and grab a few minutes of fame. The fact that we are talking about this on the blog only proves that her outlandish and somewhat crazy idea worked! She wanted to call attention to the dissection of animals, and she succeeded. I'll admit that I visited the website; I just had to! It did not change my views on dissection, but just think- even if only half of the people who hear about this girl visit her site, imagine how many could be persuaded to investigate further and eventually oppose and/or protest the dissection of animals. Although we may dismiss her as "crazy" or "stupid," I think there is an element of genius in this ploy.

I have no beef with her, she's allowed to change her name as much as anybody else.

Hmm, let's see...it is very laughable that this girl changed her name? yes. She did take it a little far, but i don't think there's any wrong in her standing up for animals and something she believes in (PETA)..But really I don't have any opposition to animals being dissected for education, because like kari and ryan say, it does take a role in the education of med students..However, i think we can all agree here..never disect a dog!! we love dogs.

Oh, and don't talk smack about ocho cinco..HE IS THE MAN I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS.

Like it has been said a few times already, I think this girl took unnecessary actions to get here point across. She should have put her time to better use, rather than spending it to change her name. Like Kari said, it would be very scary to have doctors operating on me after only studying books. I also dissected a cat in high school and what I learned through studying the textbook doesn’t even compare to that experience.

I have to say that I'm torn by "Cutout Dissection.com"'s actions. On one hand, I have to commend her for standing up for her beliefs and having the courage to put herself out there. I certainly wouldn't do it. In addition, I also have to say that I admire her tactics more than devoted PETA enthusiast Pamela Anderson. However, I do think that this is just another ploy that only gives her the 15 minutes of fame. I appreciate the creativity of the gesture, but how long are people going to really remember this? I'm sorry, but I believe there are more logical and mature ways to get across the point you want to make. I kind of laugh: I can't help comparing this to McLovin from Superbad.

I feel like this girl was very brave to change her name and take a stand. Either that or she desparately needed some attention. Either way it is working...as Ryan said earlier we are discussing this now and she has encouraged us to consider our thoughts about dissection. However, while her tactic got attention, I think it may have predisposed people to not take her seriously, thereby undermining her cause.

Actually, I think this is a great demonstration of freedom of speech. It's not hurting me; if anything it's entertaining me.

By the same token, if you support her freedom of speech, you should also respect my opinion that of all the causes you could possibly choose, this might be the absolute most worthless.

But hey, to each her own.
You go, girl.
