I think that this cartoon raises an interesting question about the food industry today. In a culture of highly processed and manufactured food, do we really know where the ingredients in our food come from? Would it even be possible to trace a specific ingredient all the way back to its source? It is somewhat unsettling to think about the origin of what we eat. Although we may think that there are plenty of regulations in place to keep us safe, outbreaks of food contamination have proved otherwise.
Like Kari said, are we really safe? I don't think that we really check everything that we bring into this country. We only inspect a fraction of all the cargo that arrives in our ports every day, so if that's any indicator, we're probably not doing a good job of inspecting much else either. As long as we import unknown and uninspected products from China (and many other nations), that pyramid will hold true and we'll continue to have paint scares, lead scares, and every other scare you can think of.
The big salmonella or e-coli scare this past summer made me thoroughly suspicious of food regulation in this country. If I remember correctly, tomatoes, spinach, salad, and Taco Bell were all blamed in succession.
